Harley-Davidson’s second-quarter profit more than doubled as the Milwaukee-based company announced its first increase in U.S. motorcycle sales in five years on Tuesday.

Second-quarter income from continuing operations was $190.6 million, or 81 cents a share, up from $71.2 million, or 30 cents a share, a year earlier, according to the quarterly earnings report released Tuesday morning.

While Harley’s president and chief executive Keith Wandell said he’s pleased with the second-quarter results and boost in sales in the U.S., his main focus is sustaining progress the company made through the quarter.

Boost in sales: Retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 7.5 percent to 53,599 bikes sold in the U.S., and 5.6 percent worldwide in the second quarter.

And worldwide motorcycle shipments during the second quarter also increased, as Harley shipped 66,815 motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide, compared to shipments of 59,046 motorcycles in the second quarter of 2010.

Harley’s shipment forecast for 2011 is expected to increase up to 12 percent over 2010 numbers. That’s because the company, which operates a plant in Springettsbury Township, expects to ship between 228,000 and 235,000 new bikes worldwide over the rest of year.

That’s a vast boost in shipments, as Harley only shipped 210,494 motorcycles for all of 2010, the report stated.

Revenue from Harley’s motorcycle parts and accessories totaled $255.4 million during the quarter, up 10.2 percent, and revenue from general merchandise, which includes apparel and accessories, was $72.9 million, up 8.2 percent compared to the year-ago period.

Looking ahead: after analyzing the second-quarter numbers, Harley officials expect a gross margin between 34 percent and 35 percent, versus the prior estimate of 33.5 percent to 35 percent.

Harley projects full-year capital expenditures between $210 million and $230 million, which includes $70 million to $85 million to support restructuring activities.

The Springettsbury Township restructuring plan includes a building consolidation plan to shrink the company’s footprint and make its York County operations more efficient.

When Harley’s Springettsbury Township plant began reducing its work force in 2009, there were about 1,000 salary and hourly employees combined, said spokesman Michael DiMauro of the Springettsbury plant.

Today, about 1,200 salary and hourly workers are employed at the York County plant, he said.

With a projected boost in motorcycle sales and shipments during the remainder of the year, DiMauro said it remains unclear whether or not the York plant will hire additional employees.
